Drop cookies are quick and tasty cookies that require no oven. Just a stove top and a little patience.
My mom made drop cookies all the time for us kids growing up, in the summer there’d be a ton of us with me and my cousins running around the farm so she’d whip these up and we’d grab one before running off on our way again. She even wrote on my Grandma’s recipe card the amounts she uses when doubling the recipe!

If you notice on the recipe card it calls for Oleo. Oleo is best replaced by margarine today. It was an oil based butter replacement, but I don’t see it around often anymore so margarine is what I usually use.
The first time I made these on my own, I utterly failed. They never set up and I ended up with gooey blobs instead of actual crumbly cookies! After that I observed and took note to understand what I was supposed to look for.

Not boiling
Reaching the full pan boil
When boiling the sugar, milk, and margarine together start your 1 minute timer after you have what I refer to a full pan boil. The actual boil isn’t when you start to see bubbles. It’s when the whole mixture is covered with the bubbles of a rolling boil. If you don’t have enough boiling of the mixture it will never set up and you’ll end up with the gooey mess like I did.
Grandma Catherine’s Chocolate Drop Cookies

Ingredients:
1/2 C. Milk 1/3 Stick of margarine 2 C. Sugar 2/3 C. Peanut butter 6 Tbsp. Cocoa powder 3 C. Quick oats 1 tsp. Vanilla
Instructions:
- In a medium sauce pan mix together milk, margarine, and sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
- Boil for one minute.
- Remove from heat.
- Add everything else to the pan and mix together until well coated.
- Drop by spoonful onto wax paper
- Allow to dry.
Tips:
- They’ll be ready when the cookies have cooled and no longer have a gloss or shine to them
- If you don’t have sticks of margarine only a tub, 1/3 of a stick is equal to 2 Tbsp + 2 tsp.
- My mom used to use Cheerios in place of the oatmeal and omit the chocolate all together to create a whole new flavor in a tasty way! These peanut butter drop cookies were some of my favorites as a kid!
